Primary Care Practitioner and Doctor Appointments

Urgent on the day appointments are offered with our Primary Care Practitioner (PCP). These appointments are for when you need to be seen with a new urgent problem on the same day. Each appointment is up to 20 minutes long.

For non urgent conditions, routine follow up or ongoing conditions a face to face Doctor consultation can be booked. These appointments are available to book in advance, and are not able to be booked on the day. A Doctor’s consultation is 10 minutes in total and telephone consultations are 5 minutes in total. When you book a telephone consultation please bear in mind the timings are approximate as the Doctor may start earlier/run later depending on the other demands of the clinic that day.  Routine appointments can be booked online.

Medical examinations for HGV/ PSV need to be booked through reception rather than online as a longer length appointment is required. Please note, these appointments are not NHS appointments and therefore there would be a charge of £85 for Tawstock patients, and £95 for non Tawstock patients which is payable in advance of your appointment.

Nurse appointments

Please contact the surgery to book a Practice Nurse appointment as these vary in length depending on the reason for your appointment.

Health Care Assistant Appointments

You can only book the following within a standard 10 minute appointment:

  • Blood pressure
  • Blood test
  • B12 injection
  • INR
  • Removal of sutures & clips.

For all other appointments please contact the surgery as you may need a longer appointment or a different clinician.

Emergencies

In case of an emergency you can phone us in office hours on our emergency phone line for urgent advice and signposting to the most appropriate clinician to support you.

NHS choices can also be used for health information, and outside of surgery opening hours support can be gained from using the NHS 111 service.

We also have Chard Hospital Minor Injuries Unit who are open seven days a week 08:00 – 21:00 (last patient admitted at 20:30) and able to see patients with minor injuries and conditions which need urgent treatment.

Consultations

Appointment Times

Monday – Friday : 08:30 – 12:30, 14:00 – 18:00
Saturday: 08:30 – 10:45
Sunday: Closed

Consultation with the clinical team is by appointment only. If your query can be dealt with over the telephone the clinical team are happy to speak to you. Please in all circumstances inform the surgery if you need to cancel an appointment so that it can be offered to someone else.

Patients are able to pre-book an appointment on a Saturday morning from 08:30 – 10:45.  The surgery will only be open for patients who book their appointment in advance and the surgery will not be open to deal with general enquiries, prescription queries or emergencies.

Please advise the receptionist if you need to be seen urgently. Please do take note that the Practice gives access to a range of healthcare professionals who all work together to meet the needs of our patients. If you have an urgent need which requires a same day appointment our dedicated receptionists will ask you for some details of your medical need. This is because our team are all trained to signpost you to the most appropriate clinician who will be able to help you. This will most likely be with our Primary Care Practitioner, or alternatively another appropriate service, for example by visiting a local pharmacy or Chard Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) based at Chard Community Hospital. If you wish to see or speak with a Doctor about an ongoing, routine or non-urgent medical condition you will need to book a future appointment, as on the day appointments are not available for non urgent needs.

Home Visits

These are generally carried out after morning surgery and before 15:30. If a Home Visit is required please phone the surgery before 09:30.

Your home visit may be done by an Emergency Care Practitioner (ECP) as part of CLICK Federation. These are trained paramedics who work for all 8 Practices within Chard, Langport, Ilminster & Crewkerne (CLICK).

Your Home visit will be assessed by your GP within the Practice and information sent to the ECP who will work from a hub in Ilminster. Once seen, your medical record will be updated at Tawstock Medical Centre.

The receptionist may ask if you could come to the surgery, as you will be seen a lot sooner and specialised medical equipment is available.
